Long Distance Dedication

cassette.jpgIf I learned anything from junior high (other than how to survive the ridicule that accompanies pubescence), it’s that nothing says love like a mixtape (or Casey Kasem). So, in addition to the eighteen videos that have now been submitted by people from three continents, I’d like to bring the children an additional gift - a CD of songs dedicated to them by our friends, donors and supporters that share a little bit about who you are and your personal messages for the kids.

To participate, all you need to do is post a comment below with your name, the name of the song you’d like to dedicate and why you’ve chosen that particular tune. If you’d prefer, make your own muxtape, and leave your dedication and a link below.

If you need some musical inspiration, here’s a few songs that I’ve posted to Twitter and the blog throughout the last few months that somehow serve to commemorate the journey:

In retrospect, I may need to move farther afield from the genre of cheese. Here too are a few songs that the children have shared with us:

PS: If you’d still like to submit your video for our Stories Matter project, we’ve extended the deadline through Monday, 6/16/08. For more info, check here.

I’d like to make 2 song dedications to the kids from one of my all-time favorite musicians, Bob Marley:

1. Three Little Birds - This song just puts me in a happy mood anytime I hear it and I hope it does the same for you!
2. Redemption Song - This is just such a powerful, moving song - just great and I wanted you guys to hear it.

I am still working on my song, but I asked Elliot which song he wants the kids to hear, and he said “E eats everything” by They Might Be Giants.

I’ve got a few, too, so feel free to pick and choose.

“Big Rock Candy Mountain” as sung by Lisa Loeb - I love this. It is so sweet and catchy and daydreamy. It’s another song that Elliot likes, too.

“We Rule The School” by Belle & Sebastian - It’s about leaving your mark on the world, no matter how big or small. Definitely good stuff.

“Do You Realize?” by The Flaming Lips - Totally optimistic and about how short life is and how important it is to love the people around us right now.

Here’s one, although I’m still thinking of others.

“Forever Young” by Rod Stewart

I want to dedicate this song to Mama Lucy’s students because this song reminds me of my mother and all her hopes for me. She always used to sing it to me when I was little and I’ve appreciated it more and more as I’ve gotten older.

I would like to dedicate to all the kids in Tanzania-

“Stronger” by Robert Randolph and the Family Band.

the reason I would like to dedicate this song because I believe Love can conquer anything, and with hearing all of your stories, both YOU and I will be stronger.

Much Love,

Taylor
